Plt Off Albert Hugo Friday, a pilot of 611 Squadron, died in a Spitfire accident over Herne Bay on 30 August 1942 and is buried at Brookwood Military Cemetery in Surrey. The crash was witnessed by local resident Wally Mankelow who was 11 at the time. In 2009 a memorial was unveiled on the spot where he landed and a ceremony was held on 30 August 2012 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of his death. The spot is marked by a marker provided by the local council as part of a historic walk around Herne Bay. Wally (now 81) still keeps the memorial planted out with flowers and visits a couple of times a week to keep them watered. He kindly sent these photos and press cuttings.
